10. Unbeatable lines (2)
Thinking of unbeatable lines (as in my previous post) there’s another pretty hot one in Lucinda Williams’ ‘One night stand’. Talking about the man whose bed she is about to leave, after anight of passion, she says:
‘I cant even say you lied to me cause you aint said nothing yet’
Upon which she leaves the room, thinking ‘that’s just another man to forget‘.
Lucinda is a marvellous songwriter and singer: such vivid perceptions! Another of her lyrics (‘Fruits of my labour’) has the following lines:
‘I aint got nobody, I’m nobody’s girl
I’m going to get my Mercury and drive around the world
and when I reach that mountaintop I’ll stand with flags unfurled’
Its not witty, like the verse quoted above, but wonderfully vivid. Another world beater is ‘long for your kiss’
The image of her on her mountaintop is great even if I can’t make literal sense of ‘flags unfurled‘.
This is another touching song by Lucinda: ‘Lake Charles’
There’s a couplet in Eddie Cochran’s ‘Summertime blues’ which also sticks in my mind:
‘I’d like to help you son, but you’re too young to vote’
In the song the line is spoken by his Congressman (MP in English). Fine cynicism!
